Now - What I'm Focused On

This is a /now page, inspired by Derek Sivers. It's a snapshot of what I'm focused on right now. Updated regularly to reflect my current work, projects, and life.

Life

"Remember, remember, this is now, and now, and now. Live it, feel it, cling to it. I want to become acutely aware of all I've taken for granted." —Sylvia Plath

I'm 30 years old. I'm currently living in Calgary, Alberta and I'm planning to move back to my hometown of Winnipeg, Manitoba very soon.

I hold myself accountable on a large number of daily tasks and habits with Beeminder.

I'm trying to start a community and accessible spaces for writers, makers, and learners through my self-hosted server (more info coming soon!), and in-person events.

Work

Regarding work, I have a few plates currently spinning. My biggest commitment is now this website, Brennan.Day! I'm a full-time writer and syndicate my work on Medium to make a living. I try to write longform (2,000-3,000 word) essays on a daily basis about tech criticism, culture, and identity and many other things.

You can help support my work here.

I also am focused on the company I founded, Berry House. I'm the lead developer of this little web development studio, taking on new clients. Our most recent project is building a wayfinder for Calgary organizations, called Calgary Groups.

I'm getting the curriculum prepared and reading list ready for the pilot cohort I'll be teaching starting this summer over at Fireweed Writing School!

For beer money, I playtest for Lysto, and perform various interviews and case studies for Respondent and User Interviews.

Writing

Beyond my essay writing, I write 750 words daily. I write technical articles on dev.to. I write in a public diary on DreamWidth. I also try to write a new poetry occasionally on my Tumblr, BK Poetry.

I've been having a wonderful microblogging on Mastodon and Bluesky. I'm also on the wonderful 32-bit cafe and MelonLand forums!

I am writing a book, a memoir focusing on the craft of writing and an imagist poetry chapbook. The working title for both is Poetics of Grace. I am also helping my Mom write her autobiography.

Education

I graduated in April 2025 with a Bachelor of Arts in English (Honours) from Mount Royal University with a 3.8 GPA. My honours thesis, "How the English Degree Will Save the World", examined the transformative potential of literary studies and introduced "bloodwriting" as a bridge between Indigenous knowledge and digital practices.

I am currently enrolled at the University of the People, obtaining a 4-year Bachelor of Science, majoring in Computer Science.

Hobbies

I love coding open-source projects (like this site!) on GitHub but plan to move to Source.tube and GitLab. I keep track of my daily coding with WakaTime.

I play chess regularly, usually a couple games of bullet chess a day and at least one rapid and puzzle a day.

I practice my French on Duolingo and Clozemaster once a day.

I read a little each day and keep track with StoryGraph. And I track my movie-watching on Letterboxd.

I meditate with my Apple Watch for a few minutes each day. I try to reach 10,000 steps per day and 7.5 hours of sleep, tracking with both my FitBit and Apple Watch.

I have recently joined the ~tildeverse! My accounts are at tilde.town and tilde.club.
